John McGann's notes for
Frank Wakefield's
Solo on I Can't Forget Old What's Her Name |

The bluegrass genius of Frank Wakefield shines throughout "The Kitchen Tapes". Frank's version of Monroe style mandolin is every bit as strong and direct as the master himself. This tune is short, but has many variations and melodic gems within. For the truly meticulous, I'll mention the first bar's phrase is notated as it is played subsequently; if you want to sound "just like the record", raise the E to an F and the C to a C#, giving the extremely hip lydian b7 mode. I believe this was a happy accident!
