Jethro Burns on Body And Soul

In 1939, tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins turned the jazz world on it's head with his masterly improvisation on "Body and Soul." Here, Jethro Burns and Don Stiernberg revisit this beautiful ballad, with Jethro's irrepressible sense of humor never far away.

The track is presented here in it's entirety as a mandolin master class. The key of Db is not the most mando-friendly, yet Jethro plays as expressively and beautifully as if it were the key of G. Listen for the subtle shifts of time feeling- Jethro's sense of swing is very bouncy, and rides the beat in a very personal way.

Check out the flow of 16th notes on page 6; a beautiful melodic line illustrating chromatic approach notes to enhance the "zigzag" qualities of jazz phrasing.

The second chorus is notated in double time, to avoid small (64th note) subdivisions of the beat.
